update source of multiple linked graphics

I've got a document with lots of linked graphics. I need to move the document
and graphics folders to different locations and delete the old folders. How
can I update the document to point to a new folder for all the graphics
without doing the "update link" thing for each individual graphic?

First press Alt+F9 to toggle all fields to display the field codes.

The linked graphics will be displayed as codes like
{INCLUDEPICTURE "C:\\old folder path\\filename.jpg"}
There may be other switches in there, but you can ignore them.

Open the Edit > Replace dialog. Type the old folder path into the Find What
box, using two backslashes for each one that would normally appear. Type the
new folder path into the Replace With box, again using doubled backslashes.
Click the Replace All button.

Repeat this for each old folder/new folder pair.

When you've finished replacing, press Alt+F9 again to collapse the field
codes. Press Ctrl+A to select the whole document, and press F9 to update the
fields. Scan through the document to make sure there aren't any "broken
link" icons displayed instead of graphics.

Sorry to say that it didn't work. Maybe I didn't read the instructions
correctly. Here's what I did:
in the Find What, I typed the current path ...
c:\\toplevel\\midlevel\\graphics
in the Replace With, I typed the new path ...
c:\\toplevel\\midlevel\\graphics

Was I supposed to include anything else, like *.png or something? Thanks!

Looks to me like you're replacing with the same path?

Assuming the actual folder names are different in the old and new
paths that you typed in the Replace dialog...

Did you have the field codes displayed when you ran the replace? You
should be able to see the old path listed in the field codes before
you try to replace it.

No, you don't have to include any part of the file name, just the
path.

What happened when it "didn't work"? (Gads, I hate that phrase -- it's
completely uninformative.) Did it say it didn't find any instances to
replace? Did it crash and burn? Did it sit there and look stupid?

I should know better than to write something as vague as "it didn't work!"
Sorry about that!
- No, I didn't use the same path; I should have written oldtoplevel,
newtoplevel, etc. in my reply.
- Yes, I turned on the field codes first, and double-checked to be sure that
I typed both paths correctly.
- The response from the software was that Word completed its search and made
0 replacements.

Thanks for your help and patience.

Hmm. After opening the field codes, try copying the old path from one of the
codes and pasting it (with Ctrl+V) into the Find What box of the Replace
dialog. Click the Find Next button. Does it find matches?

The path is truncated, so I had to type the drive and top level directory.
No, it didn't find any matches.
Figuring this out is starting to take more time than updating the graphics
one by one, so I'm going to let go of this quest. I really do appreciate the
help, however.
