Got it running! I first jury-rigged some nylon tie-wraps and pieces of
plastic and "strapped" the cooler down. Hit the power switch and it booted
fine, ran for about 5 minutes and then suddenly shut down. I then cut a
piece of wood as a fulcrum under the tie-wrap, which tightened it down more
and it ran for about 10 minutes this time, then shut down again. I'm
confident that the processor is OK, but I think since the thermal paste was
disturbed, it's not transferring enough heat to the heat sink. I'm out of
thermal paste and pads and it's an 80 mile round trip to get any, so I'll
call around to some friends before I make the trip, but for the time being
the job's on hold.
I appreciate everybody's input yesterday!
