Update: Intermittent Lockups

Intermittent lockups:

xp pro - all software/registry tweaks applied. Hard drive, memory, power
supply all swapped out. Cooling fans installed. Still locking up
intermittently. This has been going on for 2 1/2 months. Lance Naugle
suggested replacing the cpu but after a trip to microcenter to pick one up,
they advised me that the cpu was not returnable - just replaceable if
defective. So I didn't pick one up. What next? I bough a mobo at
microcenter, just got it home and realized it isn't compatible with my rdram
memory. :-( --- this is a first! In all my years of computing, I've never
been this stymied. Should I swap out the video card, sound card, mobo or cpu
next? Are cpu's available out there that are returnable? Is suicide legal in
Pennsylvania???!

If your sure it not heat, then yes, next to look at is video card.
Does your video card support DX9? Do you have DX9 installed?
I have found that DX9 locks up some cards that do not support DX9. Going
back to DX8.1 usually fixes it. I have an uninstall for DX9 if you need it.

I installed a new video card and the pc locked a short time later.

These issues can be hard to track down sometimes. You might want to try to
update the bios if available. Do you have a temp monitor on your mother
board? If you do whats the temp of cpu and motherboard? I had a customer
once that experienced random freezeups and after doing just about everything
you've done and updating the bios it still did it. I finally changed the usb
printer cord and it stopped freezing. Who knows, just some info for you.
