installed the signiture update for wd 1.14.1361.6 (KB915597) many times it
says that its successfully installed, but on wd interface its still showing
the old sig, ive also rebooted after aplying the update from windows update

with spyware doctor, ad-aware, ewido, any help would be gratefully

It should update successfully if you remove the old Defender definition file
first and then install the new one. The best method I have found is to use
the Windows Installer Clean Up program and delete the Windows Defender
signature file ONLY. SEE:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
This only works if you can update from Windows Updates or Microsoft Updates.
If you are in a corporate environment and cannot get updates, they have to be
gotten via WSUS server.

P.S. I only had to do this the FIRST time I updated Defender. Since then,
all updates have worked perfectly. No so for everyone, but that Windows
Installer Clean Up is the best tool for future problems.

thanks for your reply & info old rebel before i use this clean up tool does
it give you the option to role back just the wd update signiture or does it
affect all other apps that use the installer....

It is a potentially dangerous tool because it can remove any program
installed by Windows installer. BUT follow the directions and ONLY check the
ONE item for Windows Defender definitions. It will completely remove the old
file and that will allow the update to complete. I first used this tool to
remove the Dell installed myway search assistant from my computer. Dell had
it configured where the Windows installer could not remove the item from
add/remove programs. The uninstaller tool make quick work of that problem. I
kept it and have found it very useful with Defender update problems.

It would have been more accurate for me to say click on the 1 item (Windows
Defender definitions) and highlight it.
The tool will only remove the item selected.

Sorry I did not respond sooner. I did not get notification of your last
message. I'm glad that solution worked out for you. Since I first performed
it myself, Defender has updated normally each time wihtout any complications.
Since the uninstaller program is somewhat dangerous, I would make sure no
short cuts to it are available to any one else who might be using your
computer.

KB 915105 would also work in this case and the only item uninstalled would
be the Defender Signature Set.
