Update BIOS

I want to update my BIOS so that it is able to detect my 160 gig hard
drive. I am putting in a new hard drive in the next day or so to
replace the one I am on now. I used SpeedFan to give me SMART details
about my HDD and it says it needs to be replaced......I contacted the
manufactures site and they wrote me earlier saying they had an upgrade
for me and it would be $29.99...I was hoping it would be a free
upgrade...here's my specs

BIOS Type: Award
BIOS Date: 02/02/01
BIOS ID String: 02/02/2001-601-686A-6A6LIB09C
OEM Signon: VLB0202F
Chipset: VIA 82C601 REV 5
Super I/O: VIA 686 REV 34 FOUND AT PORT 7H

Anyone know where I can find a free update?? If that's not possible
then I guess I'll have to shell out the $$$

another quick question...if I install xp with a full format on the new
drive and it shows up the correct size afterwards instead of a quick
format where I have 24 gigs unallocated space as my current hard drive
has...would I even need to have the BIOS recognize the 160gb at all??

I have not heard of motherboard manufacturer's that CHARGE for BIOS updates.

I was told when I asked this question before that they shouldn't
charge...

here's the mobo name and model info I got from using Everest home
edition
Motherboard Name Biostar M6VLB

I clicked the link that took me to Biostar's site for the BIOS
download, but the model motherboard I have isn't listed...

I also clicked a link when I selected the BIOS tab and that took me to
esupport.com...that's where I entered my BIOS info and got a link back
to buy the update for $29.99

here's the link I get to download the BIOS upgrade

OK....after checking the bistar site some more I found an executable
file for the bios and I am a bit scared to do it...I still would like
to know if I even need to have my BIOS see the full gigs of the hard
drive if I can get XP to after a full format...

If they want to charge you it's probably for the physical thing... is that
the CMOS that contains the BIOS info? You would remove your old one and put
this in its place if it is damaged. Otherwise there should be a free
software BIOS download. Read about it first to make sure it fixes what you
want or don't bother with it. How do you know your BIOS isn't detecting a
160GB drive? Was your former drive 160GB and not detected?

There is plain and simple instructions on the site and on the Internet about
how to flash your BIOS.

It read my 160 I have now(the one I am replacing) as 136 gigs....I
don't really wanna pay for the upgrade...as I said before the only
upgrade that are on their site for my motherboard make and model is a
remove logo and something about cpu temp. and I had to find that in
the archives on the biostar site.

In that case, if Award doesn't have a freebie flash download your computer
can handle, you could simply parition the disk into two 80 Gig drives or
whatever other less than 130 you like.
The limitation is in how much disk space you can see at one time, as in
one drive letter, so creating another one lets you use the whole space
avaialable.

It would take 3rd party software such as Ghost or Acronis to do the
partitioning though, and that will NOT remove the need to back everything up
even though they say they're non-destructive; stuff happens!

Or, back up and then do a full install of windows again; tha twould let you
create the two drives. There is no way to do it non-destructively wiht XP's
tools. Thus the comments on Ghost and Acronis.

You read the 160 you have now as 136 where??? in the BIOS?? under XP's
Administrative Tools??
The original XP was only able to see 136 gig of HD space....with the
addition 0f SP1 it can see larger with the addition of SP2 it can see more.
So figure out where the problem lies first...BIOS or old copy of XP
If its a BIOS problem there are work arounds.............like partitioning
that 160 into 2 parts..100/60....80/80..whatever.
There is a free for 30 day program called BooTiTNG that will run from a
floppy see all of your 160 and then you partition and format....Do a
Google.
After you down load expand to a Floppy
restart system with floppy in place...it will boot from the floppy
When the prompt comes up for unstallation say Cancel...from that point on it
will run from the floppy.
Pick Partition Work and away you go.................dont forget to read the
readme file
