"Up" button

Bob

I am running Vista Home Premium box. When I opened a folder window in the
middle of a folder tree in XP I often used the "Up" button at the top of
folder window. I miss the "Up" button in vista. I looked and could not
find how to set up this feature in vista. Did I miss it?

Is there a setting available in vista to give me the same type of Up" button
that is in XP? Is there any way to get that "Up" button in vista?

The address or folder tree bar at the top of vista folder window is
obviously workable but cumbersome. It takes one or two extra mouse moves
and clicks to do what the "Up" button can do instantly.

I use the back and forward arrows when I have been in an upper folder in the
tree. But if I open a folder in the middle of the tree and want to go
immediately up the tree I cannot do it with the back and forward arrows.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Just click on the parent folder name in the address bar - that's only ONE
click by my reckoning...

Here is a 3rd party alternative that may help.

Hi, Bob.

As Gordon said, click on a folder name in the middle of the chain in the
Address Bar. Microsoft calls this the "breadcrumb trail" and it is A Good
Thing. ;<)

A single click here can move us "up" one, two or several layers in the
folder hierarchy. If the top level has scrolled horizontally out of sight,
use the double-chevrons to see more, or click an arrow in a blue disk to go
up or down one. Or just press the Backspace key to go Up one level. Play
with these a while and you will find there are many ways to do things. ;<)

Yep. It works. The backspace works fine as well, but seems to go only one level up.

I'd have hoped an MVP would know better. *sigh*

Backspace goes back, alt-UP goes up. Sometimes these are similar, but
they can be quite different.

To see the difference, open a new Explorer window in your profile, go to
"Documents", now go directly to Pictures using your mouse.

Hit backspace once and see where you end up. Now try again, and once
again, see where you end up.

Now repeat using alt-UP instead.

Wish people do more research before posting!

Note entirely true! See:

http://shellrevealed.com/blogs/shel...Do-things-faster-with-Keyboard-Shortcuts.aspx

Backspace: Navigate to parent folder if there are no previous navigations. Navigate to previous location in history if one exists.

Note that I never said ALT + UP doesn't work.
