Unwanted icons on Taskbar

Windows XP SP2, IE6
I have an icon on my Taskbar which indicates "Safely Remove Hardware", this
icon is generated by my ADSL USB Modem. I can hide this icon but I would
like to completely stop it from appearing in the Taskbar, is this possible?

I haven't found a way. It is there for the 95% of computer users as a
warning that they should not go around unplugging something while it is in
use.

It is not very effective though, when the icon hides itself after 5 minutes.
I think a better warning would have been a popup and stunning visual that
says "you just fugged Up" - after the plug has been pulled! (-:
