unwanted copies of photos

Each time I click on a photo to do anything with it, my
computer puts a copy of it in the same folder. I delete
them, but next time I click on a photo I get another
copy. If I'm working with them a lot, I can get dozens of
copies of the same photo.

How can I turn this off?

Don't click on them with the ctrl button pressed; if you move the mouse there will be
a copy of the file when the ctrl button is used in this manner. Select the images you
want, right-click, click copy, go to where you want them, then paste. In other words
don't drag.
