unusually high interrupts/second

The processor on my HP pavilion machine is always at
around 20% activity even when idle thread is at 99%.
Performance montor shows that interrupt time is coming
around 18%. Interrupt/second is coming to be around 6500
which is a high number. Looks like a hardware issue to me
but all the devices are in OK state as visible in the
system information window. I recently upgraded my system
from ME to XP and since I do not see any hardware issues
what can bethe cause of such interrupts that are keeping
my athlon 1 GHz processor busy? Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks.

Do you have a virus scanner?
Trojan horses can start up with your computer and stay in
the background sending back and forth information through
the internet to a hacker. This is why some people can see
their computer loading when it is idle.

Try to detach or disable devices one by one (a.k.a. lion in the desert algorithm).

YesI have Norton antivirus running with latest signatures
and my machine has aal the service packs installed. I have
a zonealarm firewall running as well when connected to the
internet.
High interrupt time mentioned in my message earlier means
that processor is busy processing interrupts. Can a trojan
lead to high level of interrupts?
