Unusual Problem

Hi:

I have an old 386 computer that ran Win 3.1. I now find that I need some of
the information from that computer and want to transfer it to my Win XP
machine.

The Win31 computer only has a 5.25 and 3.5 disk drive plus a 20 mb hard
drive, no modem and of course no usb port.

Short of manually backing up the files on multi 3.5 disks is there some way
to connect the two computers by a serial or parallel cable and transfer the
files to the Win XP machine?

Sure thing. Use XP's Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) Wizard with a
special cable that connects your computers via the serial ports. You will
need a serial PC to PC file transfer cable, available from most computer
stores.

Remove the hard drive from the 386 computer and put it into
an external USB HD enclosure. Make sure that the 386's HD is
jumpered properly when placed into the USB enclosure.

Yeah, but at that size (20MB) I'd be wondering if it is IDE (oar ATA or
EIDE) at all??
It could be one of those old MFM-drives , and would need a controller....

And since the OP hasn't come back... The files can't be that big on such
an old machine. He should probably just copy the files to 3.5"
floppies. Easiest solution, really.

Thanks for all the comments, the machine is a Zeos 386 but I'm not sure what
kind of HD it has. I responded to an earlier suggestion that the Win XP
FAST file transfer won't work with Win 3.1 it needs Win 95 or later.

I'm going to try the suggestion at the Kime site. Another possibility was
to use the DOS file transfer protocols but it has been so long since I've
used DOS that it doesn't seem to be worth the time.

I'll let you know how this works out.
