unrecognised XP

This morning my PC would not recognise my version of XP. I have been using
this (legal) software for 3 years but now it says it is a counterfeit. The PC
manufacturer went out of business about a month after I bought it (no
surprises there).
I'm assuming either I've got a virus or one of the automatic updates has
corrupted this XP software. I have tried to re validate but it won't let me.
I can't get any Microsoft help as they close for the weekend - very
unproffessional -
Anyone got any ideas? I have tried to reload windows but it won't let me as
I have installed Service Pack 2 a few years ago.

From MVP Carey Frisch - Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=56062

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data
in a detailed post -
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

Malke gave you info on how to troubleshoot the problem with Windows Genuine
Advantage (WGA). With respect to your sentence near the end that you tried
to reload windows but it won't let you since you installed SP2, create an
installation CD that has SP2 integrated on it. This process is called
slipstreaming. Aside from your current problem you might need to do a
repair with the installation CD at some point so having one with SP2
integrated on it is important. Using Autostreamer makes the process easier.
