I have 20,000 unread messages which I deleted. The top still says 20,000
unread messages evn though they aren't there. I checked off new only since
then.
How do I get rid of that? Thank you.

What are you talking about?

20,000 unread messages in what, on what, for what?
"The top still says 20,000 unread message.." --> the top of what?

Please provide more information on your problem, configuration and what you
have tried to do as well as your level of computing skills...

I'll try to respond correctly - I have win xp sp2. I followed the prompts to
be able to use outlook express to interface with this newsgroup.
Specifically, when I open o.x. I click on the title msnews.microsoft.com.
Listed horizontally are; newsgroup, unread, total, synchronize. There is also
a box under synchronize which I have checked. The reference to 20,000
'unread' is under the caption or title 'unread'. I deleted the posts but the
word,"20,000" is still under the title, 'unread'. I was asking how to
eliminate the words,"20,000" under this title 'unread'. I hope this helps
-my level is only somewhat knowledgeable that is why I want to participate in
this newsgroup and enhance my understanding. Thank you for your help.

Click File, Get next 200 messages. (or however many you have it set to.)

Most newsreaders have a 'mark all as read' function. You cannot 'delete'
messages because they are read off the server (unless you created them).
You can delete bodies and headers that you have downloaded, but I
suspect that you haven't actually downloaded any yet. Try looking for a
'mark all as read' function. You should also be able to configure
whether bodies are downloaded with headers (not a good idea!) and how
long bodies and headers are kept locally.

Cheers,

Cliff
