'Unmovable" Files

What files are marked as 'unmovable' files? Why are they unmovable? Why
does the number of them seem to increase?

Thanks,

Please give an example or two of the files you are finding are
"unmovable". In your post you should also include the name/version of
your antivirus and whether its subscription is active.

Sorry, I was referring to file marked as unmovable in the disk defragmenter
(XP & Norton's). I suppose my question would have been better framed as
'What files do the disk defragmenters consider as unmovable? And why?'

I can't give an example since I don't know which files they are. Hence my
question.

I'm using Norton Anti-virus from Norton System Works 2005 and yes, my
subscription is active and up-to-date.

Thanks for your reply

The NAV information isn't germane then. I asked because your OP was
vague and checking for viruses/malware is one of the first Windows
troubleshooting steps.

I'm not a defrag expert. I hardly ever defrag my XP boxen and when I do,
I don't worry about it - I just do it. Here are two MS Knowledge Base
articles that may have the answers you are seeking and/or point you to
further technical information about defrag:

Other regular helpers in this newsgroup are defrag experts and I'm sure
they'll have more information for you.

If you mean those that show up as "unmoveable" in Defrag, I assume it refers
to the Windows swapfile which Windows Defrag can't defragment. And, of
course, the swap file grows and shrinks as needed.

I seem to remember reading, back when I had Win95, that if Degrag
encountered a file with the h,s, and r attributes set, then it left it well
alone and flagged it as unmovable. I can't remember all the details, but I'm
damn sure I didn't dream it.
HTH

regards Tony.

Thanks for the replies. It's not the swap file since that shows separately
(In Norton's ScanDisc). It looks like 'system' files are flagged
unmovable. I don't really understand why they would be unless 'system'
files are accessed differently.
