unmountable boot volume

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, running XP Home edition, and now have a blue
screen stating 'unmountable boot volume'. The computer won't boot in safe
mode. How do I fix this? I don't have an XP disc.

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at both
ends.
Laptop/Portables:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and download
their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay software
which is not needed anyway.

What are the 4 parameters associated with the Unmountable Boot Volume
error?

You can possibly fix this by booting to the Windows XP Recovery
Console and running the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

If you do not have a Windows XP CD and if your computer has a 3.5 inch
diskette drive then you can download images to create a 6 diskette
boot set from http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994

If your computer does not have a 3.5 inch diskette drive then you can
create a bootable CD using Bart's PE Builder, boot the computer with
that, and then run the command.

Good luck

Hi,

Autochk.exe's path should be:

C:\Windows\system32

And what you are seeing is normal in the Recovery Console.
