Unmountable Boot Volume - Recovery Console won't run

At start up, I got the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" blue
screen. The message wa
STOP OXOOOOOOED (0X8131DBD8, 0XC0000009A, 0X00000000,
0X00000000

So, I booted from my Windows XP (Home) CD, and when I got
to the Windows Set Up screen and typed "R" to open the recovery console I got another
blue screen referring to ntfs.sys. The message wa
STOP 0X00000024 (0X001902FA, 0XF96E08FC, 0XF96E05FC,
0XF8EC084F

This happens almost every time. A few times I got some
message about a default keyboard before going to ntfs.sys
blue screen after I typed "R", and once I actually got to
type CHKDSK /P before the blue screen

Can anyone offer advice about how to get the recovery
console running. I have some documents on the computer
that I will need soon, and any help would be much
appreciated

George;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
