I have an pre-installed xp home addition on my dell 4500 that just started giving the unmountable boot volume error during start-up. I found I do not have the "recovery disk" and dell is no help getting me a replacement. hey say I need a new operating system.. my question is can I use and upgrade version or do I need a new complete version to fix this problem. Any help would well appreciated by me and my daughter !

Thanks !

Search for that term at the MS Knowledge Base, which can be found via the

I had this problem a few weeks ago, and after technical advice was told I had to reinstall XP from the disc. Luckily I did have this. so this is your best bet I think.

thanks Rodger ! I had printed this however The boot cycle from the HD will not allow me to go past selecting the boot types ( safe mode.. network.. ) no matter which one I select the next message is "unmountable boot volume". The tech note sate to boot to the recovery console but I believe I ahve to have the xp cd in.. which I had disgarded

Thanks again for your reply

Boot from an XP CD and choose the "Repair (Recovery Console)" option
from the first menu.

When it has finished booting and stops at the command prompt enter the
following command:

CHKDSK /R

Note: If you cannot boot to Recovery Console from the CD then you can
create a 6 diskette set that will allow you to boot to the Recovery
Console.

And if CHKDSK /R does not fix the problem then your only option is a
reinstall. I am surprised that Dell would not make a replacement CD
available for you to purchase for your computer.

Good luck
