Unlocking takes a minute

D

David Trimboli

I've got a Dell Optiplex GX280 running Windows XP w/ SP2 on a domain.
When any user locks the computer and then tries to unlock it, it takes
about a minute for the desktop to show up. Only the mouse works in the
meantime.

I've set the Performance Monitor to watch various activities during the
unlocking process, but nothing unusual shows up (no unusual processor,
memory, hard disk, or network activity). This machine has no viruses,
spyware, or adware on it.

I can't find any references on the Web to anything similar.

Anybody know what might be causing this?

I am having the same issue. I have checked everything and cannot seem to
figure out what is going on. No virus, no adware stuff. The only new thing is
the install of Norton 2005 upgraded from 2003.

I unistalled it no change. It can take from a min to 3 to get back to the
desktop. I have no issue when I log in from a boot mode.

I did notice that msmsgs.exe is making alot of calls when the system is
locked. Dave see if you can see if that is happening to you. Use FileMon from
sysessentails.com to see what is happening.

Do some clean boot troubleshooting. Tedious, yes, might it might give
you an idea of what's causing the problem.

Rock,
Took your suggestions and ran with them. Still no luck. Went so far that I
turned off everything and it still takes time to unlock. I am out of ideas. I
really wish that I could see what was going on in the background when I log
back in.

THanks
Greg

I don't know what else to suggest other than to check the power
management feature for the NIC. Is it set to allow the computer to turn
off this device to save power? In any event good luck and post back if
you get a resolution.
