unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found

I'm unable to bring up e-mail attached photos that were compressed using the
"email this file" feature in the Windows XP file and folder tasks. When
downloading the photo file attachments, I get an error message indicating
that my request could not be completed because an "unknown or invalid JPEG
marker type is found". Why doesn't any of my photo viewing applications
recognize these JPEG files? I imagine it has something to do with the way
windows compresses the files. Is there any fix for this??? I'd like to be
able to attach photos to emails using this method, but want to be confident
that the end user will be able to download and view them. Thanks.

If you search Google Groups for
invalid JPEG marker
you'll get lots of hits.

I would suggest opening the .jpgs
in a program like IrfanView and
resave them.

Download IrfanView 3.97
http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html
(get the plug-ins too)

Thanks for the quick response. I tried downloading IrfanView, excited at the
prospect of a quick-fix solution. Unfortunately, IrfanView claims the files
are ART files (even though the files are labeled as jpg), and will not open
them. HELP!! Every photo compressed through the Windows "email this file"
feature can not be opened once the email is received.

Ok...maybe the following articles will offer a solution:

(326675) "No Preview Available" and "File
Format Is Not Supported" Error Messages
Occur When You Try to View Graphic Files

Thanks a lot, John. Yes, I use AOL 9.0 for my online service. I went in,
changed the settings as instructed in the article, and voila!!! I can
download attached photo files and view them in Photoshop elements now!!
Thanks a ton.
