Unknown Hardware

When I turn on the computer it says there is new hardware (unknown) in the USB port. There is nothing plugged in. When I shut it off there is no standby button, just Turnoff and Restart. Any ideas?

I would check your bios settings for usb ports\devices. If you have no usb
devices then disable usb devices in the bios and see if the message goes
away. If your mouse or keyboard are usb then don't disable usb unless you
can switch your mouse and or keyboard for ps2 types. What hardware if any do
you have plugged in to the usb ports on your computer? It sounds like when
windows is starting it doesn't recognise a piece of hardware and is asking
for drivers. Is this a new computer or have you added something to it.

If you don't understand what you are doing in the bios then be carefull and
remember or note that you can always restore defaults if you mess up a
setting.

This is not a new computer and there is nothing plugged in the USB ports
The other problem is there is no Standby button when I shutdown. It is shaded.

Go into the bios and change the power management settings. If you have an
old computer it might be an early atx which had a dfferent type of power
management than later atx comps. What motherboard have you got and check the
motherboard manufacturer to see if there is a bios update. Fot some reason
Windows is finding usb devices where you say there are none. If you have no
usb devices turn of usb support in the bios completely. Make sure you have
the latest bios for your motherboard though first..

The grayed out stanby button is also related to power management which is
controled through the bios and your power supply. If you turn off usb
support in the bios, windows should stop asking for drivers it doesn't need.

Thanks Midnight. The comp is a 1 gig processor. I still need to use the USB ports. The problems seem to have happened at the same time
