Unknown Device (USB Port)

I have a total of 6 usb ports on my new system. 4 of them are on my new Asus
M2N board and the other 2 are on the front of new my tower case (450 W PS).
One on the front of my case has now decided to become an "unknown device" in
my device manager and will not work. The new system is only 3 months old and
I can't find any way of fixing it. I have uninstalled (it immediately comes
back as unknown). I have tried updating the drivers - "no drivers backed up
for this device". I have tried the add new hardware and it recognizes it and
again installs it as "unkown device". Just another one of those "don't
expect everything to work right" issues. The big mother f...... hammer
(BMFH) is waiting for it's turn to fix it once and for all.

Next Idea?? The drive letter manager did not work. The usb port still shows
unknown device where it used to recognize my flash memory as a mass storage
device and then show what was on the flash memory (SanDisk Cruzer or SanDisk
mini cruzer). The other port on the fornt of the case still performs that
function as described. The 4 on-board ports (rear of computer) also still
work the same way.

How many internal USB connection ports do you have on the motherboard?. If
you have a spare, try swapping the cable for the front ports to the unused
one.

Also check the USB pin diagram for both the case and the motherboard and
make sure they match. On my Antec case and Epox motherboard they did not. I
had to cut an extra ground wire on the case wiring to get the front ports to
work.

That's not too unusual. Front ports go thru a cable from the
mainboard to the front of the case. The computer case is
full of interferences, the cables often not very well
shielded and grounded.

Buy an USB hub and put it on your desk :)

I guess I'm going to write off this problem until something more serious
comes along ... lol. I already have a 4 port USB hub and have already been
taking the workaround approach. As a tech, I just hate to not know why these
stupid anomalies come along .. other than to frustrate me and remind me that
I do NOT know everything. Oh well, life and the mysteries of computers live
on. Did I mention the frustration of this kind of thing .. lol??? Thanks to
all for their suggestions & thoughts. BMFH to the ready ..... lol.

Solution was as suggested by Dandy Don ... I transferred the front panel
connectors on the motherboard (to the other pin bank available) and the
world is now turning once again. No wonder you go by "Dandy Don" ..lol ...
(one Dandy Don to another) .. thanks for the suggestion. All 6 ports are now
functioning and I still have no clue why the one port wouldn't play well
with the others - bad experience as a young port??? Computers ... go figure.
I must have been a little low on my level of frustration!!!
