uninstalling spybot s&d

Hello
I have an older version of spybot (1.1) which i can't get uninstalled. It
does not appear in add/remove programs list. There is a function within the
program itself which deletes registry entries, and then advises to delete the
directory in which spybot files are in. I have tried this, but i get the
error "Cannot delete SDHelper.dll: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is
not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." I'm
not a whiz at this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

SDHelper.dll is the Browser Helper Object loaded by SpyBot S&D. Open Task
Manager and End all the explorer.exe and iexplore.exe instances. Switch to
SpyBot S&D window, and carry-out the uninstall process. You should be able
to delete this file now. Once done, create a new task explorer.exe, which
reloads the Shell.

Go into Safe Mode and uninstall from there. To get to Safe Mode,
repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting up and this will
get you to the correct menu.

How can I uninstall it from safe mode when it doesn't even appear in the
add/remove programs list? (that's another thing I can't figure out)

Add/remove is just a convenient place to remive software, Most programs
including Spybot S&D have and uninstall icon check
all programs>Spybot S&D>uninstall?

I understand what you're saying, but it's not even listed under "all
programs". It still runs fine though, so I know it's still installed.

Go into the program folder (under Program Files) and look for an
uninstallation executable. My Spybot S&D 1.3 has unins000.exe.
Double-click it and see if that starts the uninstallation routine. If
you still have no luck, then just go ahead and install the latest
version (I assume that's why you're trying to uninstall the older one)
anyway.

Thanks Malke for your response. There is no uninstall exe in the folder(it
is an older version of Spybot) and yes you are right...I want to get rid of
it so I can install version 1.3. Anyway, what I have done is to delete the
registry entries, and then delete all files in the directory except for
SDHelper.dll, which I guess I can live with. On another topic, I read in one
of your other postings that you don't recommend taking driver updates from
Windows updates. Could you please explain why as this seems so convenient to
me. Thanks again for your help.

Can't speak for the person you're replying to, but in MY case, EVERY
time I've downloaded a driver update from the Windows Update site, I've
had HUGE problems.

I stopped doing that loooooooong before SP1 was released.

Get your updates from your hardware manufacturer's website.
