Uninstalling an application

In attempting to uninstall Quicken using the Add/Remove Programs
utility I discovered that I had no Change/Remove option for that
application. The same held true for a number of other apps in the
Add/Remove list of programs. The utility was not accurately tracking
my use of the various programs as well. Excel, for example, I use on a
daily basis but the date of last use as shown in the Add/Remove
Programs utility was months old and corresponding to its date of
installation.

Unable to uninstall Quicken with the above procedure, I next ran the
install utility on the Quicken CD and ordered an uninstall before
beginning a new installation of the program. The uninstaller began to
run but aborted with an error before the removal was accomplished.

I am unsure as to how to now accomplish the removal of Quicken before
its reinstallation. I'd appreciate sugestions -- as well as advice on
what might be causing the issues with the Add/Remove Programs utility:
missing Change/Remove buttons and lack of usage tracking.

Arnie,

A similar thing happened to me recently when I found I couldn't make changes
to Microsoft Office via Add/Remove Programs. Also found I couldn't
uninstall various programs.

It turned out that the hidden directory C:\Windows\Installer was completely
empty. (You have to use Tools /Folder Options/View in Explorer and untick
Hide System Folders before you can see this folder or its contents). Both
problems went away when I copied over the contents of C:\Windows\Installer
from a backup drive .

However something is still not right because the 'last used' date shown for
many programs is incorrect . Also the 'frequency of use' indication seems
not to be working properly. Not sure if this will lead to problems later.

The annoying thing is that I don't know how the contents of the Installer
folder got deleted. NAV2002 shows no viruses and Adaware shows nothing
sinister.

I do know that Add/Remove was ok before I installed the two Critical Updates
KB832894 and KB828028 but can't tell if this is significant.

Raj,

No offense, but your link was generic and one I had searched, albeit
how well, I'm not sure. I had been seeking more specific sugestions.

thanks anyway,
Arnie

Arnie,

Have you tried just installing it on top of the current installation.
Sometimes you need to do that, then you can uninstall it, then install
again fresh. Also if you haven't, their could be directions on the
quicken website for uninstalling their product by means other than
add/remove programs.
