I recently bought a used computer with win 2000 pro
installed. I want to remove this os and replace it with
win 98 because the win 2000 is very corrupted and very
unstable. I do not have the win 2000 disk. I tried to
refomat the hd but cannot access dos. I have tried to
download dos to the computer but the system will not run
it. Thanks for any ideas to help reformat.

OK.. A couple things I really do not understand about what
you are trying to accomplish. First, why go back to Win98
at all??? There are dozens of white papers and technical
writeups that rave about Windows 2000 as compared to any
previous Windows operating system. Not to mention,
Microsoft has substantially increased support and
documentation (perimarily on-line) for Windows 2000.

My recommendation is that you do yourself a favor and stay
with Windows 2000. If you have lost (or never had) your
Windows 2000 installation software, go and spend the $200
or $300 whatever retail (or you can find it on eBay for
around $100). It's worth it.

If you start your installation of Windows 2000 you will be
able to reformat the partition(s) using the Windows 2000
Setup.

If you still insist on puting Windows 98 (second edition)
on your system (YUK) then my suggestion is to download a
small utility called ZAP. This utility removes the boot
partition and the master boot record (MBR) which is what I
believe is preventing you from formatting currently. You
will then need to reformat your hard drive (use FAT32) and
install Windows 98 (YUK).

Windows2000 is a good OS. Windows98/SE is a good OS also. It's what you're
used to, and what the purpose of the computer will be used for. Windows
2000 is having problems with the Blaster Worm, and Win98 is exempt. I keep
Win98 on at least 1 PC always... Win2k is good if you can tech it and
support it. Depending on the OP's computer experience, it's just a matter
of what he wants.

And to answer his question, a deletion of the current partition, recreation,
and reformat must be done before Win98 can even consider installing. I'm
pretty sure that Microsoft has Knowlegebase articles on reverting back, or
enough information to get him going.

Good Luck! (Keep 98 if you're familiar with it!)
