Uninstall Outlook Express for good

T

titus12

I have Microsoft Office Outlook and Windows Live Mail with XP Home SP3 and
IE 8. I removed Outlook Express using the Add/Remove Windows Components key
in Control Panel. However, some of Outlook Express files are still on my
computer. Is it safe to delete the Outlook Express references in Regedit?
Will this help to remove Outlook Express for good?

Thank you,
David

I wouldn't bother removing anymore than you already have. You gain nothing
and risk a lot considering how integrated Outlook Express/Internet Explorer
is with Windows XP.

For most - I just recommend never using it if they don't want to. ;-)

You cannot remove OE, only access to it as it is a part of Windows XP and
IE6. What is your goal and what interference do you have with OE being on
your machine?

Outlook Express is part of the Windows XP operating system. Want to hack
away at your operating system? Go ahead. Just don't expect any sympathy
when you bugger up your computer.

Replace Windows XP with Vista. You will eliminate Outlook Express. You might
prefer Vista to XP. I don't.

Vista has the replacement to Outlook Express. It is known as
Microsoft Mail. It appears to only be slightly better than OE.

David - I've found if you boot in Safe Mode you can delete the Outlook
Express folder in Program Files. I've done this on numerous computers over
the years without a problem; I've never deleted registry entries thereafter,
however, so I can't speak to that end of it. Same goes for the /MSN Gaming
Zone and /Online Services folders that are untouchable when you boot normally.

Lol...just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's gone. Moreover,
hacking your operating system is sure to come back to bite you sooner or
later.

That's the way not to do it if you value the integrity of your system!
The safe way is to select Start, Control Panel, Add / Remove Programs,
Add / Remove Windows Components, uncheck the box before Outlook Express.
Click on Next and Finish. Restart the computer.

Posting to a thread ending two months ago is usually pointless.

Hope this helps.

But, it doesn't remove OE, just makes it inaccessable.

No Tom it can easily be restored. The point being that doing it the way
I suggested avoids the risk of damaging the system. I suspect it also
would satisfy the requirements of the original OP. Out of sight -out of
mind!

Gerry I suppose there are possible consequenses to doing it my way (which,
mind you, I do after removing OE from A/R Programs) but in the several years
of doing that on dozens of machines I've had no obvious issues. And "out of
sight, out of mind" does not free up disk space. ;-)

Is the size of Outlook Express significant? I cannot check here because
that would result in the destruction of my extensive Outlook Express
folders. I suspect I could find far larger disk space saviings on most
systems with ease.

Bill in Co.

It is not significant. I checked mine (in Pgm Files), and it's less than 5
MB there. That is indeed insignificant. Of course there are other
related directories, including the one where OE stores its mail, but even
with that, it's not all that large, unless you've saved a ton of mail (which
would be true for any email program).
