unindentified dvd partition

I have been asked to work on an inherited computer. Its disk has two
partitions, C and D. In addition, a folder on D contains 6 GB of files for
some junky old movie, and has been mounted as another partition E, which XP
treats as a DVD.

I want to remove that partition and delete those files, but everything is in
use and can't be deleted. Booting in safe mode doesn't help. I don't know
whether XP is doing this, or some other program. If it's XP, how do I kill
it? (Drives in the Management console can't do it.) If it's some program,
how can I tell which one? Can anyone name a few likely candidates?

Lacking FDISK, XP has a GUI wizard for its functions, reached via
/Control Panel / Admin Tools / Computer Management
Is this the tool you used?

DaemonTools is one program that can mount dvd files. You may want to use
Process Explorer to see what program is using the files. Google it.

Yes, Disk Management in that section. Options are grayed out.

That looks promising. I'll try it. Thanks.
