Unidentified Operating System

S

Steve

I recently formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows
Xp. Before I partitioned the Hard Drive and then decided
not to have it partitioned any longer. But now I get the
Operating Choice Window at boot up and it gives me the
choices Windows XP or Unidentified Operating system on C:

I only have one operating system on C:?

How do I get rid of this?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not correct the issue, then:

Right-click on MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Open Control Panel and click on "system". From the dialog that opens,
click on the "Advanced" tab. From the "Startup and Recovery" box at
the bottom, click on the "settings" button.

When the Startup and Recovery dialog opens, click on "edit". Your
boot.ini file will now open in Notepad. Look for the line that
identifies the unknown operating system and delete it. Be careful not
to delete the reference to XP. Save the file and OK your way back to
the desktop. Reboot the machine. You're done.
