Unidentified Network Issues

I have tried every suggestion on this and other tech net sites with zero
results.

I bought an HP Pavilion three weeks ago and righ out of the box, the
on-board NIC (Intel Pro-100) shows up as "Unidentified Network (Public
Network)" I can change it to Private, but cannot rename it. It reverts back
to public on a reboot. ICS does not work well if the internal netwrok is a
public network. After any reboot, I have to reset the network to "Private"

- I have downloaded updated drivers for the NIC. Didn't work.
- I have disabled IPv6 (Doesn't appear to work anyway - system would give
itself an internal private adress and the toredo tunnel doesn't show up.)
Didn't work.
- Turned off Windows firewall, Didn't work.
-- Turned it back on. didn't work
- Internal NIC will not accept a default gateway because the IP address
assigned to it by ICS is the gateway.
- Disabled on-board NIC and inserted a separate NIC (Realtek 8139) Driver
dated July 2007.
- On-board wireless is disabled.

The multihomed Vista may receive "Unidentified network" message if it is configured incorrectly. In your case, I don't see the default gateway or it is 0.0.0.0. I would disable the ICS and setup just one connection to make sure it works.

The adapter: PPP adapter Sprint Mobile Broadband - Novatel Wireless:
is my dialup modem (Sprint AirCard) that provides our household internet
access.

Is going to my wirless router which is how our other computers connect to
this computer in order to get out to the internet.

- This NIC will not accept a default gateway because it IS the default
gateway for my home network to get to the internet.

MY ISP (Sprint) has decided to NOT assign a default gateway through their
DHCP server, therefore there is no default gateway on my internet connection.

I don't have the luxury of being able to connect a router directly to my
internet connection. My PCMCIA card for accessing the internet must be
connected to a computer. There is a router out there that will accept my
AirCard, but it is over $200 and it doesn't allow VPN tunneling (something I
use to maintain my enterprise of 72,000 systems after hours).

I read somewhere else in one of these threads that Microsoft designed Vista
to not allow private networks on any systems that already have a public
network. If microsoft believes that everyone has the capability to tie into a
DSL or cable modem, they are sadly mistaken. There are millions of Americans
that cannot get any of that. Instead we are stuck with Satellite, Cellular,
or (even worse) landline modems. I recently had to use a landline modem and
it was slower than watching grass grow. Sprint AirCards are the fastest thing
in this neck of the woods and that was only after placing a directional beam
antenna on top of a 40 foot pole pointed at the nearest CDMA tower.

Bottom line: I have to have the PPP Adapter to Sprint and I have to have one
NIC operational in addition to that.

If it's any consolation....I can change the name of my true Public network
all day long. I want to change the name of my Private network AND!!!! I would
like it to stay private after a reboot of the system.

I have tried ALL the suggestions from ChicagoTech. They didn't help.

Bob,

Thanks for your help. I reactivated the (onboard) IntelPro 100+ into the
systems and it is working great. Don't know why it wouldn't before, maybe
just had to be reinitialized. This time it did install a different driver
than the one it came with.

I now have my Private Network that says HOME and it stays on restart.
