Undoing System Restore

Hi-

I did a system restore because I thought I has some virus or other
programming running in the background and making my computer run EXTREMELY
slow... so instead of finding out what that might have been, I did a system
restore.

When I did, it deleted a program I had installed after the restore date I
picked, and so this particular program wasn't showing up again. So, I went
to undo the restore but there was no option to.

So then I had it restore back to today, I didn't think it could, but I tried
it. That program didn't come back.. So then I tried to go back and undo the
2nd restore, and this time the option was there to undo it, so I did. So now
I'm back at my first restore date, still with no program. Can I undo that
one too? I want to get it back to working like it was today, without doing
either of the restores. Help!

Hello Melissa,

Where is the source for the program that you refer to? Why can't you just re-install it?

btw, viruses & other malicious infections hide themselves extremely well. System Restore will not get around the fact that you'd have to run a few programs to get a clean system. System Restore is a great feature, but it just will not guarantee a clean one ( free of malware).

You are highly urged to follow the steps at
"The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol"
<http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm>

You have to use many utilities to insure your system is free of malware.

See <http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware>

Sysclean would be a good first run for virus check. Just be sure sure to also run other spyware / malware checks.

Hi Melissa,

Did you by chance do the first restore from Safe Mode or Command Prompt?
The reason I ask is that an undo restore point is not created in these
circumstances.

Without having the undo from the start and you already restored to the
most recent restore point, then I would suggest just to reinstall the
application in question.

Yes, I have Norton Anti Virus and Ad-Aware but I will do these that you
mentioned as well. I just thought if I could get that program back without
installing it again.. it was Quicken, so I lost all my info. and have to
start over. Oh well! Thank you!

Yes, I did run it in Safe Mode.. I read something (on here perhaps?) that
suggested to do that. I know about computers but not enough, obviously!
Thank you for your help!

Hi Melissa,

Using System Restore in normal mode should be first choice. And if a
restore is to be performed in Safe Mode, a new restore point should be
created first, to have something to fall back on.

Your Quicken data files may still be there in the folder
c:\Program Files\Quickenw or c:\Program Files\Quickenw\backup
If so, they should appear in Quicken when you reinstall it.
