understanding files and folders

Is there some help I can get understanding files and folders?

When I open My Computer/Local Disk (C/Documents and Settings/John (my
Name and I am the pc's Administrator) I get a list :cookies, desktop,
favorites, My documents, start menue, userdater, windows, ~file 201kb and
ntuser.dat DAT File 4,096kb.

When I go to Edit/select all it says I also have 8 hidden files.
I follow instructions to show all files and these are the hidden ones :

Application data, NetHood, Recent, Local Settings, PrintHood, SendTo,
Templets, ntuser.dat Text Document 1KB.

Can anyone tell me what these things are and if they should remain hidden
ect.?

If you don't understand much about it maybe you should leave them hidden.
That is the reason they are hidden in the first place. I don't think there
is anything there except in the My Documents folder that you should delete
or move in a folder view. You can empty cookies + delete Temp Internet files
in the Internet Options Box.
You can look in the folders + as you learn more you will figure what some
of this is. If you leave all folders showing just be careful.
