Underlining a Tab

I have automatic numbering on and my text to the right is indented. I need my underline to go across the numbering and text. How can I get the underline on the tabbed space between my number and the text

You can't exactly underline that tab (as far as I can
tell), but you can improvise a bit. You will need to use
outline numbering, as it gives you better control of
formatting. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/index.html and click the
link for outline numbering to see some more details of how
this can work best. To sum it up, before applying
numbering click Format > Bullets and Numbering. Click the
Outline Numbered tab. Select one of the choices, then
click Customize. Select the number style you want. Click
Font, choose an underline style, click OK. Click just to
the right of the number in the Number Format box. Press
the spacebar twice, then press Ctrl + Shift + Spacebar.
The space after the number should now be underlined.
Select Right for Number Position, and Nothing for Follow
Number With. Click OK.
I'm really not sure how well this will work, but it seemed
successful in my experiments. For best results, set up
outline numbering according to the directions in Shauna
Kelly's website, even if you are using just one level of
numbering. You need every advantage you can get to make
this work.
