hi all, purchased legitimate copy of winxp home ed. approx. 6 weeks ago .
about 3 weeks ago i purchased a new harddrive.
when i loaded windows on original hd , validation was succsessful. no
problems.
i switch harddrives and install winxp on same computer(only change is
harddrive) and i get message that i've used up blahj, blah, blah licencing blah
blah ,please use different product key!!!@$#^%
now ive, wasted a few hours trying to contact a msn rep but as soon as it
scans my sys it figures my os is not legal and therefore i'm not entitled to
assistance.

i guess there time is much more valuable than mine

hows that for service and support?

this is my home computer.no one else has had access to the disk and it has
not been installed on any other machine.
i do not understand why they keep slammin the door in my face.
any ideas folks???

thanks in advance

You'll need to "activate by phone" to obtain a
new activation code....takes about 5 minutes.

You installed, and validated, WindowsXP on a machine of a certain
configuration. That configuration has now changed - it is not the
"same" computer (the box might be the same, the video card might be
the same, etc ... but the hard drive is NOT the same).

"An msn rep"? What's an msn rep? I assume you mean Microsoft phone
support.

The hard drive only carries one point and should not trigger activation.

Could I politely suggest you acquaint yourself with the netiquette and
procedures of Usenet newsgroups - of which this forum is just one of
10s of thousands - and introduce yourself to the workings and
configurartion of a proper newsreader program designed for this
purpose.

When you are acquainted, you will see that part of the standard setup
processes is to be able to :-
a)create and input a standard introductory phrase to open all
responses (in fact, the opening quote I use is the standard default
phrase used by Forte Agent newsreader, one of the best.
b) a standard signature closing script you can also use on all
messages.

You've taken unnecessary umbrage at something of which you have little
understanding.

A reply is necessary, as a matter of courtesy.

You are preaching to the converted. I find no argument with your
argument, and in no way defend Microsoft.

However, that's the substance of the licence agreement that comes with
the product nad that you substantively agree to by installing the
product. Just think, how can MS tell that you haven't installed their
one-user licenced product on a second machine; how are they to know
it's just a different HDD in the same machine? To them, your "new"
electronic/on-line activation is just a 2nd attempt to use the product
which you agreed (by virtue of installing the product the first time
and activating it) to only install on one computer.

Some constructive use of grammar/syntax would go a long way to help. As far
as rhetoric is concerned - do you speak as you write I wonder.
Your post is bit like forum-speak!!! or chat-room for kids.
But then you are not a newsgroup user, I believe.
If you feel you have been insulted/belittled, stay around - it can only get
better.
You seemed to have ignored the first piece of help from Carey(others may
disagree).
I doubt you will get anymore.

You're right about that! He lives in Australia!

So? If I went to a German language newsgroup begging for help, I
wouldn't expect more courtesy just because it isn't my first language.

Hi Brent,

You will need to activate by phone before you can validate.
1>Click on activate windows
2>choose activate by phone
3>choose your country
4>call the toll free number--DO NOT close the activation window at any point
during the process or the generated key will change
5>follow the phone prompts to enter the code displayed--this will fail and
you will be connected to a phone rep
6>No long explanations are required--simply state that you re-installed and
that the copy is only installed on one PC when asked
7> the phone rep will give you a 42 digit code to type in that corresponds
to the generated code on your screen

The process usually takes about 5 minutes. After you activate, the pc
*should* validate without problems.

You bought a license to use windows--you did not buy the software.
You do not have to ask permission to upgrade, but you do have to reactivate
your license.
Yes it sucks, but there are alternatives out there that don't require
jumping through hoops.

Actually, you don't buy any piece of software, you just buy a license
to use it on a particular computer. If the hardware has changed, the
software can't tell whether you have just upgraded the original
computer or installed it on a second machine.

Personally I think Microsoft makes enough money that they shouldn't put
people to all this trouble. Most people never upgrade a computer or
install Windows on another one, so the amount they lose by copying is
probably only a small percentage of their vast profits. Most shareware
authors, who need the money more than Microsoft, don't take such steps
to enforce installing on a single machine because they know that many
users won't buy software that employs hardware locking. But for most
software, you have a choice. The only choice you have, if you don't
want to use Windows, is to use Linux, which isn't something most people
want to do.

Yet every single store and even Microsoft itself says they are selling
software. Bait and switch comes to mind.

He doesn't know he's posting to usenet--he probably doesn't even know
what usenet is.

He thinks he's posting to a Microsoft "help forum."

There's an MVP in another of these groups who begins (actually ends,
because she top-posts) with: "After furious headscratching, so-and-so
asked..." with occasional curious results. ;)

I suspect this guy has no clue how rude he appears, and it isn't even
his fault. I hope he takes your advice so this doesn't happen again.
