Unable to Start Server Service - svchost.exe

This problem has me stumped and I hope someone can give me some help.

I can't share any hard drives or folders on a local computer network. When
I try to share a drive or folder on my network I get a error message: "The
Server Service is Not Started. The Shared Service was not Created at this
time"

When I go into run>services.msc and right click on 'server', I see the
service is stopped (it is set on automatic). I try and restart the service
but then I am greeted with a new error message: "Could not start the
server service on local computer. Error 2 The system cannot find the file
specified" The file it is looking for is svchost.exe I believe.

I checked the processes and find 5 copies of svchost.exe running. The file
is indeed in windows/system32 where it said it can't find that file. Argh!

I did a AVG virus scan and a Spybot S&D scan and both came up clean.

How do I get that server service to start up again so I can share drives
and folders?

Thanks

Al

Hi Wes!

This worked out great! I was missing the srv.sys file. I followed the
instructions and everything is now working 100%. I am able to share folders
and drives.

I appreciate the help!! Thanks a ton! :)

I have the same problem described by Albertville on both my LAN PCs, " Could
not start the Server service on local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot
find the file specified."

I tried the solution in MS KB314498, to no avail, and also found that
"EnableSharedNetDrives" entry was not in (either PC) the Registry. I just
tried Wesley's "winonline" suggestion even tho a Search showed I had both
srv.sys, srvsvc.dll and svchost.exe files.

This occurs in both WinXP computers using Linksys wired router. The LAN has
worked for years in the past until now. Does someone have a recommendation?
Can I replace the missing Registry lanmanserver entry "EnableSharedNetDrives"?

Regards, James
