Unable to Setup VPN Network Connection in Windows XP Pro

James Wendt

Hello all!

I think that I've tried everything and I'm stumped. I've tried starting all
of these services with no luck and I'll be happy to give you even more
information if you need it.

You may respond directly to the group or to my e-mail (may be best to
respond to my e-mail since the groups get get pretty busy)

I was unsure of where to stick this request for help, so I dropped it into
the groups that seemed close.

I have Windows XP Pro and it is running beautifully in all respects but I am
unable to setup a VPN network connection without receiving an error.

Here are the steps I take:

1. Open "Network Connections
2. Click "Create a new connection"
3. Click "Next" and then choose "Set up an advanced connection" and then
click "Next"
4. Choose "Accept incoming connections" and click "Next"

At this point, the computer sits braindead for a minute or two with the
"Next" button visually still pushed.

After a few minutes, I get a message box stating:

"Incoming Connections depend on the Routing and Remote Access service which
was unable to start. For more information, check the system event log."

The Even Log show the following events in order:

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center".
2. In the Search box type: VPN , and hit enter.
3. Click on "Make a VPN Connection" and follow the instructions.

If the above does not work, then go to
Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the General tab, place a check next to
"Normal Startup", click apply and reboot. Then
repeat the VPN installation instructions.

From a search on the EventID.net site... Its suggested to...

Look at this KB article...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q299013

***************************
Event ID: 20103
Source RemoteAccess
Type Error
Description Unable to load C:\WINNT\System32\iprtrmgr.dll.
Comments Adrian Grigorof
See Q299013 for the troubleshooting procedure for one of these events.

From a newsgroup post: "I fixed this by removing and reinstalling TCP/IP."
Another post says: "This was resolved by disabling RRAS, enabling and reconfiguring it."

Reinstall the latest service pack after such action.

Are you trying to set up a VPN client connection? Or do you want to set up a
VPN server?

Windows XP Pro cannot act as a VPN server.

Wow pardn'r...of course XP Pro and XP Home can act as a PPTP VPN server...The only limitation is
that XP can only accept one incoming VPN connection at a time...

Steve,

This could explain why it's not working, but then why does it appear that
you are given all of the settings necessary to setup a VPN server?

(Just asking)

Hi,

This edit corrects Error 711 and 5:

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Standard Checkpoints:

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Set these three to "Automatic":
Remote Access Connection Manager, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager,
Telephony.

My fault, I was wrong, I forgot that XP Pro *does* let you set up a VPN
server.

Not sure what might be happening here, because I've never tried it myself.
You might try microsoft.public.win2000.ras_routing...
