unable to send files

Using windows messenger, I am able to send files, but not receive them. The
only firewall I have is the standard xp one. Is there anything I can do to
cure this? Would I have the same problem if I dowloaded MSN Messenger?

Greetings Jim,

The Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP, when engaged, will not allow you to send
files. You can either shut down the firewall (see below), or just configure it for file
transfers. Click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click
Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your
connection, then click Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your connection will
usually be called Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of your Internet
Service Provider. Click the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection Firewall is turned
on (or turn it off here, and don't bother configuring it). Then click the Settings tab.
Click the add button and then in the Service Settings, type in the following information.
For Description enter MSN Connection for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for both
External and Internal ports enter 1863. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now you need to
repeat the last step but changing the ports to 5060, 1503, 6891, 6892, 6893, 6894, 6895,
6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. Yes, 13 (including the first one) will now be selected.

Then click the 'Remote Desktop' entry (that was there before you started) and click Edit.
Enter 127.0.0.1 as the IP, and click OK (can't change anything else). Make sure all 14 (the
13 you added + Remote Desktop) connections are selected then click OK. For screenshots on
this procedure, see

Hi Jonathan

I've added the webpage version to Favourites, so I can do it when I've a bit
more time.

Many thanks

Hi Jonathan

I followed the instructions on your web page - this includes a 14th port,
3389. When I tried to enter that one, I got an "already in use" message.

Returning to your posting just tocheck, I noticed the lack of 3389, and also
that the web page doesn't mention the "remote desktop". Is this essential?

Hi Jonathan

Great, I can now send files, but I still can't send video. However, I
noticed that though I got a "Logitech cam detected" as soon as I plugged the
cam in, it was only about 5 minutes later (after I'd removed the camera)
that I got a message "cam software installed". Should I wait a while after
plugging the camera in before I try using it?

Hi Jim,

Although it should now work, since the software (drivers) have now been installed, it
wouldn't have worked until it said it had installed the drivers and that it was ready to use.
You'll also need to do through the Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard to select the camera after
it's been plugged in.

To do so, open up the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then choose Audio Tuning
Wizard.

Hi Jonathan

I've done the audio/video set up test in both windows messenger and yahoo
messenger....cam and built-in mike work beautifully in both.

Many thanks for your advice

Jim
