Unable to send email using exchange

Andrew

I have set up Windows Mail to connect to my exchange server at work. I have
used IMAP and have used the settings given to me by the IT guy
(exchange.xxx.ac.uk for both incoming and outgoing connection).
I have been able to download the folders and emails from the server
successfully and it is delivering mail into my inbox with no problems.
But when I try and send email I get the following error:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'exchange.xxx.ac.uk', Server: 'exchange.xxx.ac.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem may be?

Which version of the Exchange Server are you using ??

Meanwhile are you using a Corporate Anti Virus on that Exchange Server. If not which one are you using.

Usually this error signifies that you are scanning your incoming and outgoing emails. Disabling the scanning of emails usefully fixes this issue. But in the Server environment and especially with the Exchange server it can also signify some other issue.

Try the disabling the scanning feature first and see if the issue stops and post back with the version of the Exchange server that you are using

Peter,
thank you for your reply.
I am not sure which version of Exchange my employer is using, but I will try
and find out on monday.

I have had some success though. I played around with the antivirus setting
on my pc and have now managed to get WM to send the email and move it into
the sent items folder. However, the emails do not get delivered and my AV
software sent me the following email:

I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned
below could not be delivered to one or more destinations.
The e-mail server has responded with the following error:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Cannot open SMTP connection to '193.63.6.44'
Connect: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not
properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed
because connected host has failed to respond. (10060)

--------------------------------------------------------------

Not sure if that is helpful or not really!

No doubt at least some of your issues are due to interference from
your antivirus. The fact that your antivirus is even intercepting and
paraphrasing WM error messages is indicative of overly intrusive
integration between the antivirus and the email client program.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Thanks for the reply.
But, paradoxically the email remains in the outbox and doesnt send if I
disable the email scanner. Whereas, if I enable the scanner it sends the
email at least as far as the exchange server, although it does not reach the
recipient.
I am fast coming to the conclusion that this exchange server is not set up
to receive email and to forward them. Maybe it is "read only".
This is pure conjecture of course.
I have now tried this with Windows Mail, Outlook and Outlook express always
with the same results.

****Update****
Just in case anyone was watching this thread and waiting for an answer to
this question, here is the latest:
Apparently I was trying to achieve the impossible! In order to synchronise
my Mail client with the Exchange server you have to be connected to the
server for both incoming and outgoing mail (which is fairly obvious really)
My settings allowed my to read the mail on the server, but you are not able
to access the exchange server directly for outgoing mail. So, as a work
around, my admin got me to have the exchange server settings for my incoming
mail (reads off the server), but because you cannot access the server from
another service provider he got me to put in my ISP's settings for out going
mail. So, I retrieve email using the IMAP settings on the exchange server and
send using my ISP. It is not a particularly elegant solution, and I still
can't synch my calender or tasks. But I at least I can send email via the
company email system when I am at home.

Thanks for the update. You were lucky to find an Exchange admin
who was willing to help out.
