Unable to see some pc's on VPN network from remote location

I have set up a local network of 3 machines at 1 location connected to a
linksys router > dsl (static IP). At home my pc is directly connected to the
other linksys router > cable modem (dynamic IP)...

My VPN seems to connect with no problems, I can 'ip access' some of my
machines but can't 'ip access' my main file server. However I can ping it and
the other machines.. Any idea what the problem could be?

Also, I noticed that when I double click on the "internet connection status
/ internet gateway" icons in my task bar, the "Activity" status is
continually tranferring data, however I am yet to tranfer any data via my VPN
and haven't really downloaded any large data.. after 3 days connected to the
VPN my "Activity" status reads as follows;

INTERNET > Bytes SENT > Bytes RECEIVED

INTERNET GATEWAY > Bytes SENT > 45,000,000
INTERNET GATEWAY > Bytes RECEIVED > 1,050,000,000

MY COMPUTER > Bytes SENT > 90,000,000
MY COMPUTER > Bytes RECEIVED > 60,000,000

My ISP's status page shows I've only download around 250MB this month??

Assuming you can ping the server by ip, what do you receive if using net view \\serverip command?

Thanks Robert, here's the message I get when I log into \\server.ip ...
However, "The other machines on the that network are working fine, it's just
this one machine"

MESSAGE:
Windows cannot find '\\server.ip'. Check spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start buttom and then clicking Search.

I'm only guessing here, but is it possible that it may a Groups Policy or
something keeping me out? Windows firewall is disabled the "though it would
still be nice to have Windows Firewall ON aswell, just for some added
security, I guess!"

If you can ping the server and other machines it strikes me as 1 of two things:

1. A name resolution problem on you home machine or,
2. An issue with your router/VPN. Some routers do not allow name resolution
traffic to pass through the VPN and you may need to enable it. This is
particularly true for NetBIOS traffic. If you are using NetBIOS over IP you
may need to enable this on your router - some of which require access to a
WINS server. I cannot say if this is the case for your routers as I have not
used those models before but it may be worth investigating.
