Unable To Save Movie.....Help Please

G

I just finished putting together a short movie with Movie Maker. It's length
is 38:42 -all the source files I imported from my digital camera and are mpeg
format - I'm using roughly 75 source files - About 4 transitions (all the
same) - no effects - 2 music files (both mpegs)

I've saved movies I've put together before using Movie Maker but nothing
like this length but they did work. After getting error messages like -
"Missing source files, locate and find or delete and try to save again" I
went through and checked every source file I used and they're all there. Yet,
it still will not save in any format, e.g. .wmv or dv-avi.

I'm desperately in need of getting this movie saved so I can transfer it off
my computer so I can enter it into a film festival and the deadline is
approaching soon.

I even went through the Problem Solving page on Saving movies on this site
and tried some of the suggestions such as upgrading and trying to save in
other formats with still no luck. I'm basically at a lost on this. Sometimes,
after trying to save it in a .wmv format and it won't go through, I will try
to save to save it in a dv-avi format and an error pops up saying "Completed
Successfully" and then it will continue to save the movie to a CD which I did
not authorize and which still doesn't work.

If anyone has any suggestions and how I might be able to save my movie to my
computer I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

I shot the entire movie with a Sony Hi8 DCR-TRV460 NTSC - I use a USB port
to transport the footage from my camera onto my computer and use a firewire
to transport the footage from my computer to my camera.

Also, I've used this same procedure before to transfer footage and edit with
no hassle. With this movie I've just finished I started having this problem
:(

One option would be to do a system restore to go back to when it was
working.... Hi8 via USB means you are using some sort of capture device to
get it from analog to digital. What's that?

Sorry for all the questions, but...

I don't mind the questions. I appreciate any help you can offer. I use a USB
that came with my camera to transfer footage from my camera to my comp. I
capture it with the Movie Make

On the system restore.....like I said before, I could save other projects I
created with ease - but not this one. I don't know if it's the size or what
but it's really frustrating. Would a restore or a defragment make any real
difference?

The TRV460 is a digital8 camcorder with a firewire/iLink connection, not a
Hi8 analog camcorder..... and Movie Maker works best with firewire
connections, getting full digital video.

USB connections are for still images from the camcorder or for lower quality
MPEG files, not for full digital video DV-AVI files. If you captured
directly into Movie Maker and got a WMV file, then maybe the file should be
re-indexed - see the Importing Source Files > Video > WMV page of my site
for some notes about the Windows Media File Editor.

I looked on your web page about the Windows Media File Editor and I'm still
unsure what exactly to be looking for. Could you maybe specify what exactly I
should seek out or how this could assist me in saving my movie......

The File Editor is one of the utilities in the Windows Media Encoder
package.... simply opening a file in it and closing it again automatically
reindexes the file. No need to do anything with it. That often fixes a WMV
file that MM2 is having problems with.

It wouldn't assist you in saving a movie... just assist in being able to
import a saved WMV file into Movie Maker.

Another thing......when I've tried the "Save to CD" method a message pops up
that reads - "no recordable drive detected" - I looked at this on your web
page too and you said it's usually because of a CD that's already full. But I
get this message before I even put a CD in a drive. I have two recordable
drives. A burner that came with my comp. and a external DVD/CD burner - any
thoughts on this?

Still unable to save my movie. Another question - when I transferred footage
to my comp. from my camera and let's say a clip that should have been just
one clip was split into two clips because of size maybe and I put them
together when I put it in the movie to make it one clip again would that
cause a problem for it to save?

The recordable drive issue is usually resolved by a setting. See the second
of the 'Dated but Timeless Posts' on the CD Burning > Intro page of my
website.... and it's often the case with dual CD/DVD drives.

Putting clips together in a project shouldn't result in a saving issue.... I
don't have any more suggestions other than what's already on my Problem
Solving > Can't Save a Movie Page.
