Unable to "Save As" WordPerfect

G

Guest

I have one PC which this seems to be a problem on although my others are
slightly different in the combination of Word/WP/OS.

I am unable to save any document in any format, expecially Word Perfect,
other than the few defaults that Word has in it: HTM, Word, RTF, etc. If I go
into Options, Save, I do not have WP as a default save as either.

I have:

Reinstalled converters from CD
Installed ALL from CD
Installed Converters Pack from MS
Copied all files located in \program files\common\Microsoft\text converters
of a working PC to the problem PC

Nothing seems to let us do this task HOWEVER we can open WP files in Word so
the converters have to be installed.

See responses to your posts in word.conversions.

In the Microsoft Word newsgroups it is considered bad form to post separate
messages to multiple newsgroups. If you need to post in more than one forum
(unusual) please post a single message with both forums in the header of
that single message. That way (1) your question and the various answers stay
together, (2) less space is used on the news servers, (3) less bandwidth is
used on the Internet, (4) you only have to check one forum for answers that
appear in both forums, and (5) you won't unnecessarily annoy the people you
are asking for help. This isn't meant to criticize you. We were all
beginners once and the only way to learn is to try. (BTW, a number of the
Microsoft newsgroups don't want posting in more than one newsgroup, period.
Check the FAQ.)
Take a look on the MVP FAQ website under "getting help" for more reasons ase
well as other suggestions for getting answers more easily and quickly. <URL:

I did not post this to anything but the group I am now responding to. I have
posted under another account a similar message to other groups HOWEVER two
things:

1. I used the web interface from Microsoft to post to this group as my
provider did not list this group.

2. Nobody has responded with an answer which works in the other groups and I
see post of similar problems in this group.

3. I really don't need a lecture on posting procedures, I need a product
that works correctly. So although I am sure you have posted some helpful tips
and answers next time how about instead of giving me a 5 min lecture you just
give me an answer or go on about your business.

I have worked on this problem for two weeks. I can find no answer or
solution. Since this was an OEM install there is no support from Microsoft
unless the client pays another $35 to get a product to work as it should. So
now I am stuck with asking MVP's and other users for any suggestions which
they are willing to provide for FREE even though MS made a nice chunk of
change from the sale of a piece of software.

I did respond with a method that works when I answered your other postings.
It involves getting an old file from another installation. Perhaps you can't
read the threads in the other groups or the responses to your posts. See
http://addbalance.com/word/wordperfect.htm#converttowp. OTH feel free to
disregard and complain to the wind to your heart's content.

As one of the MVPs that you are 'stuck with', who provides his time and
expertise free, I wonder why you think you even deserve to be helped when
you adopt such an attitude. FWIW the product is working correctly as
intended by Microsoft. The functionality of many of the filters has been
reduced or removed for reasons of security. Charles - who also provides his
time and expertise for free to ingrates - has already indicated a
workaround.

Please see that I tried the suggestion and it does not work. I have tried
everything under the sun that should make it work yet it does not.

The end customer is ticked at me because it isn't working so I'm ticked at
MS for the lack of support they provide to OEM software and for what they
cannot deny has been a lack of support for WP issues. Heck they are being
taken to court, again, because of it. I won't even go into pulling the
filters because of security, I notice they never pulled any of their own
products for security concerns such as Outlook launching HTML attacks but
that is another rant.

All I need to do is to get these filters/converters to work correctly. We
can open WP documents but we cannot save as even after all the things I have
done to the system including the old file copy.

I'm not sure why you feel that Microsoft has any *obligation* to make its
products save in a format compatible with a competing company's software.

Then save as .rtf, which WP can read. As has been stated elsewhere, these
conversions are fraught with problems anyway. Converting back and forth
would be a recipe for disaster.

Ok this is not the forum for this but let's start out with the fact that the
CUSTOMER who paid and bought software because this software (Word) has always
been able to open and save WP formats. MS provides converters and a converter
pack for doing so. This being the case I do expect Word to "SAVE AS" WP and
my installation and others do so it is not a missing feature but a bug that
is causing this one PC not to be able to do this.

Since this is a problem that not just I am posting questions about it's
obvious this is an issue. Customers who have used WP for years AND/Or are
forced to using WP or WP formats for certain legal issues cannot be told, "to
bad", or they will just go back to WP or for that matter Open Office, it's
that simple. If you think I am being short then sorry but you should be in
front of my customer who spent good money for something they consider is
broken and considering they are looking at a SBS03/Sharepoint/Office
migration this one PC is blowing that whole deal.

Hey, I, and the others who have answered your questions do _not_ work for
Microsoft. We don't get paid for this. If you don't like people telling you
that the product doesn't work the way you, or your customer, expect, too
bad. I would really like to be able to flap my arms and fly; but I don't get
mad at people who tell me it isn't going to happen.

You can contact Microsoft to complain. Personally, I'm tired of your
whining.

It's not whinning to get PO'd at a product not working and not being able to
find a solution especially when that product is from a company as large as
MS. Anyway here is the fix which was not offered or suggested here.

Issue: Cannot Save As WP or other file formats.
Fix: Check the registry entries below and verify they are there:

You can contact Microsoft to complain.
You can email (e-mail address removed). Don't expect an answer, but with a good
subject line, all emails should be logged and directed to the correct place.
Let them know that the lack of a converter is costing them customers.
