Unable to replace corrupt file

J

John Wilson

Late last evening as my PC was shutting down, it downloaded and installed
three new updates from MS.
After it finished and my PC was completely shut off, I turned it back on
again to discover that I couldn't
get any further than a black screen telling me that the "isapnp.sys" file
was missing or corrupt.
Whether the update had anything to do with my problem I can't be 100% sure
but I don't trust MS 100% either.

Okay...enough of the drivel...here's my problem.
There is a very well detailed article on how to rename and replace that file
using my original OS CD.
Unfortunately, I can't rename it (as it instructs) or even delete it
(meaning that I can't extract a good file
from the CD to overwrite it).
I've already "played" with another file in the same subdirectory to insure
that I have all my syntax right.
It's only this file that's giving me (and my PC) the trouble.

Does anyone know of a way that I can delete or rename the corrupt file so
that I can overwrite it?

TIA for your help,
John

I'm in exactly the same situation. Does anybody know how to resolve
this?

What same situation, or resolve what? Unfortunately, your post includes
absolutely no details.

I am in the same situation as the rest of the thread.

What thread?

Please understand that many people never use the Web interface to read
posts, there's a lot of traffic here, and consequently your post is without
any context whatsoever.

As far as I can tell, yours is the only post in the thread.

I am in the same situation as that unanswered post from 2 months ago.

And that file is? There's no information here to allow anyone to help
you.

You should be able to use the Recovery Console to extract the file you want,
whatever it is.

Alternately, removing the drive and attaching it to another system will
give you complete control over the drive's contents.

Finally, a repair install may help.

Please realize that piggybacking on a dead thread will not help you get
answers.
