unable to open pics from usb or email

Suddenly, my computer can no longer read pics from the
usb. The usb recognizes the hardware but is unable to
draw/preview the pics. Even if I download the pics, they
are not readable. I've tried this with several different
devices and come up with the same results. I can download
these pics on another computer, save on a disc, and then
transfer to my system via the disc and all comes out
fine. Also, when I try to view an attachement/pic from an
email I get the same problem. Except with a pic from an
email, I am able to save it and then view.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. Any
suggestions?

Many have reported that after installing Real Player 10, their camera would
no longer be recognized. The only solution is to uninstall Real Player 10.
However the kind of problem they report is different than yours. In your
case, the connection is made but you cannot transfer. Thus I would check the
USB connection.
To check or repair your USB connection:

Go to Control panel>Performance and maintenance>System>Hardware>Device
manager>Universal Serial Bus Controller, click on the + sign to see the list
of installed devices. If your camera is connected, it should be listed there
with a yellow flag (the yellow flag indicates that although the connection
is there, it is not working properly).

Right click on this yellow flag item>Properties>Troubleshoot. See if the
troubleshooter can help. If not, click on Action on the top bar and then
Uninstall. Leave your camera on and connected and reboot. XP should now
recognize the camera and install the driver (I am assuming here that your
camera is fully compatible with XP and according to your manual you do not
need to install a driver, this should be true for cameras of 2001 and up).

Try the following first and see if this would repair your e-mail problem and
possibly your camera problem. Running this command will not mess up your
computer.
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the opening textbox:
REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL
and press the Enter key.
Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI...
This will take a second to run and you will get a confirming message.

Thanks for your reply. I haven't installed Real Player
10 but I doubled checked just to make sure no one else
installed and I still came up with nothing. I've already
checked the USB under the device manager and everything
is in order. My camera is compatible with XP and I don't
have any trouble using this with other computers. And I
still can't figure out the connection between the problem
of not being able to open pictures from emails unless
they are saved first and the problem with XP's failure to
recognize any type of pic from the USB. Thanks again.

If you open Outlook Express and go to...
Tools / Options / Security tab...
it may help if you uncheck
"Do Not Allow Attachments etc.etc."
