Unable to open attachments in Windows Mail

S

Sue

Hi
I've searched other questions on this, and here's a summary of my problem:
I cannot seem to open attachments - and I'm sure I used to be able to. I
have AVG Security. I have gone into Windows Mail and unticked the box in
the Security section. I've tried sending to my other email accounts (yahoo)
and still not been able to open attachments.
I have Vista 32bit, Service Pack 1.
I'm also getting an ongoing series of error codes on
C:\Windows\system32\avgrsstx.dll which all show 'bad image'. This file was
modified on 16th June - but I'm not sure if its connected (and if not, where
can I get help?).
Thanks

Inability to open attachments in Windows Mail is a known issue that is
affecting some who installed IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
Even without uninstalling IE8 you can make it work for all but TXT and
JPG attachments by doing the following:

Right-click on the shortcut that you use to open Windows Mail.
Select Properties. In the field labeled 'Start in' change the existing
value to %UserProfile%. Click OK. Restart Windows Mail and try opening
attachments.

Your error message is probably unrelated, but do the following:
Your AVG antivirus was probably installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you
disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist?

Have you installed IE8?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

I have found that if I save the attachments that I cannot open to either
documents or desktop they will open then. The trouble started for me 3 days
ago after windows updates.
