I am unable to logon to the domain with the network cable
attached to the network. but once i login with the cached
credentials, and then if i connect the n/w cable to the
computer, i can see atleast my n/w drive. What causes
this problem? Any input is highly appreciated

Unable to logon or it takes 5-20 minutes while you have the network cable
connected?

This can happen if you are not on the same network with your domain at the
time you are trying to logon. For example, you use your laptop at work to
logon to your domain. You then take it home where you have a high-speed
connection, but your work LAN is behind a firewall and you do not have VPN
set to connect before you logon to the laptop.. In that case, Windows XP
will attempt to connect to the corporate network for some time before it
times out. However, if you are hooked into NO network at all, it assumes it
should use cached and does so.
