unable to log in as administrator in normal mode

I have 2 users under Windows XP home, one is administrator, while the
other is account in my name, both are set to have administrator
functions. The machine boots up into my account routinely, but every
now and then sometimes comes up asking for administrative functions
when the account is supposely already set up for it. I am not able to
enter administrator account from normal mode, so the only way to log
in as administrator is in safe mode.

Should that be like this?

Not showing the Administrator account on the "Welcome Screen" is a
default setting with XP.

To show the Administrator account on the "Welcome Screen":

-Run Regedit
-Navigate down the tree to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
-right click, click DWORD Value
-name the DWORD Administrator with a capital A
-double click on Administrator and type 1
-hit enter
-restart...
You'll have the Administrator user on your start menu.



As for your problem with the other user...
In XP Pro, you can right click on my computer; go to manage; select
local users and groups; double click on administrators under groups,
and add your user.

But, if i'm correct, the only way to set administrative in XP Home is
to go into User Accounts on the Control Panel, and change the account
to "Administrator" or whatnot.

Try both of those things and see if that helps.

use the following Keyboard combination.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE (twice)

Can't say. You need to be specific about the actual thing. Exact text. What exactly you were doing.

Admins are all the same but they are also still users and normal user rules apply.

oh yea, two more things:
1) Windows will no longer automatically log you in when you turn on
your computer, since there are now two users that you can choose from.
If you do, in fact, have no password set now it should log right in
upon start up. If you don't have a password, set one; then download
TweakUI and have it automatically log on, if you wish.

2) To remove the Administrator account from your "Welcome Screen," you
must go back into RegEdit, and change the DWORD value to 0 instead of
the 1 I explained to set it before.

Hi there. I tried the regedit sequence, and found all the way to
UserList. There are 9 entried there, with the exception of first
entry, the other eight all says REG_DWORD for "Type". Under "Name",
there is no entry with "Administrator", so I don't know which one to
change.

As for changing user account, under normal mode, Administrator account
is not there, which is the reason that triggered this question. I
could only see the Administrator account if I boot up in safe mode.

To answer another poster's question about why I thought of this whole
thing, I am having problem with one particular file folder. Its access
or permission just doesn't appear "right". Most of the time it's ok,
but every now and then some file or sub-folder in that folder cannot
be accessed or modified. I have the whole hard drive set up as shared
with other network machines, but from other machines, this particular
folder is also the only one that I cannot access. I thought it's just
a variant of some sort, but there are just too many "coincidents"
affecting this particular folder. I also did enter safe mode under
Administrator to change permission for this folder, but none has
worked so far.

Yes. By design, the only way to log into the Administrator account of
WinXP Home is to reboot into Safe Mode. For WinXP Pro, pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome Screen will produce the standard login
dialog box.
