I have had so many problems with Vista it's exhausting and just when I
thought things were calming down a bit, up comes something new. I have a
Dell Inspiron E1405, 32 bit, Vista SP1 wireless, D-Link router with a
desk-top (XP) wired to the router, and a HP printer (also wireless) set-up
to work through the network. Since everything through the network shares a
WPA-2 key, there's no need for me to use network discovery nor do I want to
since I like my privacy, live in a townhome where there are lots of other
wireless networks up and running, and don't want to risk having my private
information out there.
Anyway, I also have McAfee Security Suite running and we're not supposed to
run 2 firewalls, but Windows won't let me turn off their firewall! Well,
more exactly, I can turn it off but then it automatically turns on Network
Discovery (figure that one out!), and when I turn off Network Discovery, it
automatically turns Windows Firewall back on again! Nothing I do makes a
difference! It seems it's either one or the other--it won't let me turn off
the firewall and Network Discovery at the same time. I have been plagued by
Network Discovery turning itself on every so often without me being aware of
it until I stumble upon it, so I'm never sure how long it has been on, but I
have learned to check every day or two. It has never been this impossible
to manage.
Any ideas? I'd really love to get this one settled so that the firewall and
ND both stay off unless I go in and flip the switch. Frankly, I'm so fed up
with Vista that I'm about ready to head for the Mac world and I never
thought I'd say that! However, after almost two months of problems
associated with Vista (basically, since the SP1 download succeeded), I'm
ready to concede defeat and retreat.
