Unable to install USB driver: update does not apply

Hello,

For pretty much every USB-based storage device that I plug in to my laptop
(USB sticks, external drives...), Vista is unable to find a driver. It first
pops up a couple of times telling me that it can't find it and that I can
choose for it to try and find a solution, and in the end it points me to this
update:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...25-280B-4613-A600-C61224BACD1C&displaylang=en

I download it, but then it tells me that "The update does not apply to my
system."

So now I'm stuck without any way to use USB sticks or external hard drives.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - but I already have a file with this name in my inf directory. I
don't assume it wise to replace it, so what should I do?

Long shot: Remove the driver. On the driver install.exe package, set
Properties--Compatibility tab to XP Compatible. Now run the install.exe As
Admin. If there are any resultant .exe files, make them XP Compatible too
before running As Admin.
