Unable to install Media Player on XP home edition

Pls help.
I get the following message when I try to install any WMP.

This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version
of Windows. For more information, view the information at the Microsoft web
site.

I have a Dell PC with Windows XP Home Edition with a valid license. Please
advise how I can correct this. Thanks

If any of the MS' products fail to install then you need to install
competitor's product first. Once this is done then try installing MS'
products so that it will install whatever! this is new trick I have
learned recently. MS doesn't like people using other products!

Have you tried installing Real Player first?

You might want to post to the media player newsgroup.
