Unable to install digital camera

I previously posted this question under "windows XP general" but after some
reading in, Windows XP Photos, I decided this was the place to post this
request.

I am having trouble installing a USB digital camera...Fujifilm PinePix A303.
The computer I am trying to install it on has windows XP. Originally it had
windows 98 on it but some one had taken windows 98 off, fdisked and
reformatted the computer & then did a clean install of XP with SP2. While
trying to install it I have had several error messages. Some of the error
messages were: The device cannot install (code 10), error extracting support
files access is denied (install wizard), the remote procedure call failed and
there may have been others. When the installation starts, at some time is
will ask for another disk when in fact that is not any other disk available
for the camera driver. I have tried for several hours to install this camera
but it refuses to install properly. Does anyone have any ideas what could be
causing this problem. I have tried the original disk which is compatible with
XP and I ever downloaded the latest driver off the website and it still
refuses to install. Any input would be appreciated.

How old is the camera? Quite a few will just plug in and be viewable as a
removable drive now when using XP? If it will then you should get the XP
ping and bubble saying new hardware found, it should list the camera and
then tell you it's ok to use it.Which mean you can see the card in windows
explorer and drag and drop the files to where you want and then use the
editing app of your choice to work on them.

Graham, Thanks for the information. I really do not know the age of the
camera . It is a Fujifilm, model A303. My friend is on vacation this week. I
was checking the Fujifilm website and I believe you are right, that the
drivers are already installed in XP, if I am reading it right. For this
question Let's assume the driver is installed. Would I start with the
computer off, plug the camera into the USB and turn it on, then turn the
computer on, or would I plug it in the USB bus while the computer was running
and then turn the camera on? When I see the "new hardware found" should I
just click on it and follow through with the directions until it gives me a
"finish" to click on? I am assuming that I should plug the camera in to the
USB bus, turn the camera on and then turn the computer on. Then when the
computer starts it will find the new hardware and I can follow through with
the "found new hardware." Please advise which way I should do it. Thanks
again.

Start with the PC on.
Connect the camera using the usb lead and then turn on the camera.
XP should give you the new hardware found ping.
The yellow balloon should come up saying new hardware found and it should
just go through it's work and need no interaction from yourself. The big
found new hardware wizard box should not open.
When it has finsihed installing it should say that installation has finished
and your new hardware is ready to use, then the balloon closes.
Go to windows explorer adn search under my computer for a new removable disc
or something similar depending on the type of card it is.

Graham, Thank you very much for this information. I really do appreciate it.
My friend will probably be back this coming Saturday from vacation. I will
let you know how it turns out after he gets back. Have a good evening.

Graham, I followed your advice plus the advice of Yves Alarie, from this
forum, and I have the camera working where he can get pictures from his
camera. However, it does not work the way it did in windows 98. When the
camera was installed in windows 98 as soon as he plugged in the camera he was
able to see the pictures as they were automaticallly opened. They do not
automatically open now in windows XP. When the camera is turned on a window
pops up with a folder...double clicking this folder leads to another pop up
window with another folder. When clicking the last folder the pictures will
open up. Is there anyway that he can get the camera to work the way it used
to even thought he is just happy to be able to get his pictures the way it
is. I am just wondering if he could get the pictures to automatically open as
soon as he turns on the camera instead of him having to double click to
separate folders to get to them. Thanks.

I still have the same problem. But, when I got the Windows Scanner and
Camera Wizard working again, I didn't need to have my camera listed. The fix
for the Wizard that worked for me was one of several in the posting "Camera
and Scanner Wizard not Automatically opening HEEEELP!!" of 1/27/2005
Good luck,
John
