Unable to find Computer D in workgroup

J

Jim Strenk

Just added a new computer (Computer D) to home network. When looking thru
the workgroup, computers A, B and C are listed, but not D. If I use My
Network Connections and do a search of computers using NO NAME, A, B, and C
are found, but not D. If I do the same search and type in Computer D, it is
found.

If I add a network place computers A, B and C part of the workgroup are
listed, but not Computer D. If I attempt the same this time using
\\Computer D for a search parameter, it is listed as a workgroup member.

I'm using a Linksys BEFSR81 router that once was using DHCP to assign IP
addresses. I turned this feature off months ago. Is there a setting that I
missed, or do I need to do something else with the router. I have reset the
same via power off several times.

Why do Computers A, B and C show-up regardless of how I access the
workgroup, but NOT Computer D?

I've checked several times and Computer D is a member of the same workgroup.

What gives? How do I go about fixing this mess?

Any tips, suggestions or reccomendations will be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to report Dave, no joy! Thanks for the suggestion however.

I am still unable to see the new computer within the workgroup.

Any other suggestions?

What rights do I need to establish in order for users at Computer D see the
rest of the network? After shutting down all computers A, B, C and D,
computers A, B an C are now able to see Computer D. Computer D is still
unable to see the network. When attempting to search the entire network, I
get an error message:

"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Doing a quick comparison between Computer D and other computers, nothing
seems to stand out as to what rights or security policies are different that
would explain why I can access the network even if logged in as
Administrator.

Suggestions as to how to access the workgroup would be appreciated!

Be sure you use the same Protocol for the new computer.
The IPX/SPX is a good one to use on all of them.

You'll want to create an account (in Users Accounts) on the WinXP machines
with the username and password that you use to logon to the other machine(s)
with. Then you'll need to share out the resource(s) with permissions for
those users. Also make sure they're all part of the same workgroup and on
the same subnet. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$ password
(Inter-process communication)

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003 machine, Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 needs to authenticate the
user. If the user account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then
access will be denied.

Just running over the system protocol with you,
The IP/TCP is one all must use,
To add IPX/SPX do the following,

Control panel,
double click Network Connections,
Right click Local Area Connection,
Properties,
Highlite Client for Microsoft Networks,
Click Install,
Highlite Protocol,
Click Add,
Select IPX/SPX.

I found on my local network,
IPX/SPX was also needed to make mine work.

Good Luck,

I was able to install IPX/SPX prior to reading your instructions. IPX/SPX
didn't work. Please read previous post regarding rights. I think it's a
rights issue that is not allowing me to see other members of the workgroup.
If I specifically search for a computer, after about a minute or so, it will
be found. The other computers will NOT be found with a BLANK NAME SEARCH.
A machine name MUST be typed.

Thanks for the protocol instructions. Is there any tweaking of IPX/SPX
needed? Do the other machines require the same?

Current network consists of 4 machines. Computer A Win2K with S.P. 4 and
updates installed. Computer B XP Pro with S.P. 2 and updates installed.
Computer C, brand new XP Pro with S.P.2 and updates installed. Computer D
XP Home with S.P. 2 and updates installed.

Computers A, B, and C have the default Administrator with the same password
and a named Power User with the same password being used. I can log onto A,
B, or C as Administrator using the same password for all 3 machines, or as a
Power User, again using the same password for all 3 machines. Computer D is
the girlfriend's machine. It can see all 4 machines within the workgroup.
Computers A and B and D can see all 4 members of the workgroup.

On Computer C, when right-clicking the My Network Places Icon, UNLESS a
machine is SPECIFICALLY entered, NO MACHINES are listed. The same is NOT
TRUE for the other 3 machines. I am also getting an error message which I
listed in an earlier post within the same topic.

Shouldn't having the same User Name and Password on Computers A - C allow me
to view all members of the network?

I've never had this problem before. Again, are there rights I must invoke
to access and see all 4 computers from Computer C?

I shall take a look at your suggested readings and see what they recommend.

Thanks for your help, Dave. It is appreciated!

Thanks, Dave! This might help. I was just thinking that at one time, the
router was using DHCP to assign IP addresses for the workgroup. I turned
that feature off several months ago. It it possible that with the new
machine connecting to the router using STATIC IP's for all workgroup members
that that might be causing the problem.

I shall re-enable the router to assign IP addresses Dynamically to see if
that doesn't fix the problem.

Again, many thanks!

Problem Solved! Between you last MS link and the idea of "something" having
a "residual effect", I realized over the last 24 hours, Computer D, the
girlfriend's computer has never been restarted or turned off.

Using browstat.exe on the W2K machine, I found out that Computer D contained
the Master Browser. Rather than turning off the machine, since I don't know
passwords on that machine, I simply unplugged the cable from the router to
Computer D. I restarted the other 3 computers. Lo and behold, Computer C,
the one I've been having the problems with was elected Master Browser! I
bet your now kicking yourself for not suggesting to check for Master Browser
Status. Don't you just love it when a complex problem with multiple
possible solutions is rectified by a rather simple and elegent solution?

THAT SOLVED THE ENTIRE PROBLEM OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE WORKGROUP MEMBERS!!

I have set things back to their original settings, using NETBIOS default
setting and all is well!

Thank you Dave for taking time to help me out. Between you, Squire and
myself, we can now put this problem to bed!
