Unable to edit embedded excel graph in powerpoint

My IT guy and I have run up against a very strange issue which has yet to
find a solution...

I create or open a powerpoint presentation and then "Insert>Object>Create
from File>" and then choose my excel workbook which has graphs already
created. That part is fine. The problem is when I double click the embedded
object and receive the following error: "Microsoft Office PowerPoint can't
start the application necessary to open the object. An error occurred and
this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this
feature now? If I choose Yes, I receive the message that the "server
application, source file or item can't be found. You may need to reinstall
the server application." If I choose, no, I also receive an error message.

I have both my powerpoint and source excel file in the same folder in my My
Documents folder. I thought maybe the fact that the linked file was over 64
characters, including pathway, was the issue but I altered that to no avail.
I also tried placing both files on my desktop - no luck. I log on to anyone
else's computer in the office and run the same files and it works perfectly.
This happens on both existing and brand new presentations.

Any thoughts? I do these things on an almost daily basis and I can't keep
using others' computers.

We did install the latest XP service pack that Microsoft recently released.
All virus definitions are up to date. I'm running Windows XP, Office 2003 on
a Dell Latitude D600 laptop.

Thanks...

I have 1.25 GB of RAM and less than 300 fonts installed (I saw elsewhere that
someone had suggested too many fonts as being the culprit).

Thanks.

It's possible that the registry settings Office depends on have gotten whacked
(that's techno-IT-speak for "hosed")

Start PPT then choose Help, Detect & Repair.

Help>Detect & Repair did not fix my problem.

I cannot figure out how to disable the auto-protect office files feature in
my antivirus software (Symantec Anti-Virus). I did choose which file
extensions I wanted protected and chose just .dll, .doc, .exe. I did not
auto protect .ppt or .xls.

Rebooted my computer but still not working. Checked that I had the latest
Service Pack from Microsoft and that was already installed.

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The link below explains how to disable Norton (Symantec) AV.

click Start, click Run and type
regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll"

I tried to remove the file officeav.dll but it was not found on my computer
so I guess this means it must already be disabled on my machine.

My search for an answer continues...

Thanks!
