Unable to download

I've recently noticed a reduction in my broadband connection speed
when using internet explorer on Windows XP. I use spybot S&D, avast
and Zone Alarm.
I've tried downloading other tools such as ad aware or a squared,
however
when the download starts it doesn't seem to make any progress, then
times out after half a hour or so. I've also noticed an increase in ad
pop ups.
The nextwork utilisation during the failed download is about 0.8%.

Since I am now unable to download applications to detect any malware,
what can I do?

Download them on another machine, burn a CD, move it across. However if
your existing software is running fine I doubt ad aware is going to find
anything. Have you contacted your ISP to ask them to check the state of
the connection?? it's just as (or more) likely to be network problem
than malware.

Check your security settings in IE (IE/Tools/Internet options),
to see if the file downloads are being blocked in the internet
zone, or the trusted zone, if you've added those download sites
to the trusted zone.

Check your hosts file, to ensure the download sites are not
being redirected.

Check the zonealarm log to see if the download is being blocked.
I'm thinking about an active ftp download, where the site you
are downloading from has to be able to establish a connection
to your computer, for the data component of the download.

Please post back, with your results.
